Lisbon Treaty - Cowen tells Fine Gael and Labour to step up.

Brian Cowen caused a bit of a stir over the weekend when he called on the opposition parties supporting the Lisbon Treaty to in effect step up their efforts to see it passed. This was in response to a poll which sees Fine Gael voters split on whether to support the Treaty or not. Obviously this did not go down well, and Labour accused the Taoiseach of being slow off the mark with all stages of the treaty so far, from White Paper to the information campaign. Cowen rode back on his remarks later, saying it was not an admonishment of the parties, merely a call of encouragement. Looks like Brian's known diplomatic skills were once again mis-interpreted.

At the same time Cowen insisted Ireland had played more of a part in this treaty than any other, and could be proud of its central role in its negotiation. Cue raised eyebrows. Is he seriously expecting us to believe that all the parts of the Treaty relating to loss of veto in some areas , judicial loss of sovereignty in some areas, loss of a commissioner, decrease in voting strength, are something we can be proud of? I don't know if the Oscars can be handed out twice in one year, but he's a shoe in for Best Actor Keeping A Straight Face.

I cannot understand why Brian Cowen would want his people to vote yes to lisbon. A seemingly intelligent man, wants Ireland to have no rights, no vote, and as for vito. We have a population of four million and that includes immigrants, we would need to have the support of largely populated countrys to side with us and eh what if that does not happen? There are alot of what if's around the lisbon treaty, so why take a risk when we already have our rights. It only took 800 yrs to get them. I urge people who not understand the lisbon treaty to vote no!! If it was to benefit our country then why aren't they shouting about how it would benefit us. Its all very mysterious. One thing is for sure Finna Fail will not have my support come the next election, i demand the right for leaders, who will do right by there own people and not preassure from Europe. I am disappointed in Brian Cowen.
