Lisbon Treaty - Countdown continues to polling day.

Just over a month remains to the vote for the EU Constitution Mark II, and each side is gearing up to exhort the voters to at least turn out on the day, as apathy and confusion about the treaty will surely have an impact on the result.

As a No supporter, I take offence at the Taoiseach (now former of course) Ahern's remarks that the No support was 'lunacy'. Hardly, since the most rational arguments from each side have in this writers opinion come from the No side. The Yes camp tend to resort to the old 'Europe has been good to us' and 'the No voters are loony leftists and have a hidden agenda'. Whereas the No side tend to use the articles in the treaty to back up their argument which is the way it should be done. And it is clear that the treaty is ambiguous and so utterly ridden with bureaucratic-speak that it is possible to make relevant points for and against each paragraph, and this leads to total confusion. Result? Turnout will be about 40% and the No vote will win.

Bottom line is, Europe will continue on as before and the world won't collapse for us if we vote No. We'll keep our sovereignty intact(for now, as a Plan B is surely already drawn up) and all will be well in the world. The Yes campaigners in government will have to slink back to Brussels and get the dressing down they are dreading from the Federalists and try again.

It's a battle that will be very interesting indeed.
